Ferragosto, Summer Vacation, and the Wines to Have With What You’re Having to Eat

Technically speaking, Ferragosto is an Italian holiday, celebrated on August 15th in observance of the Feast of Augustus.  In the broader sense Ferragosto means August holidays throughout the month—an exodus of Italians from the city to the beach, or to the mountains, or to other destinations to spend time with family and friends; to forget about work and obligations. The origins of Ferragosto can be traced back to ancient Roman times when Emperor Augustus established the holiday; it was a way to celebrate the end of the harvest season and to give workers a well-deserved break that happily comes just before peak wine grape harvesting time.

During Ferragosto, many Italians escape the sweltering heat of the cities and head to the countryside or the coast to enjoy a few days of relaxation. It is common for families to rent a villa or stay in a seaside resort, where they can enjoy the sun, sea, and delicious food and wine. One of the most iconic meals of Ferragosto is a picnic lunch, known as a “pranzo al sacco,” which typically includes a variety of fresh, seasonal ingredients such as summer vegetables alongside cured meats, cheeses, olives, and bread.

When it comes to wine, Italians have a deep appreciation for their local varieties and like to pair their meals with wines that complement the flavors of the food. One of the most popular wines during Ferragosto is Prosecco, a sparkling wine from the Veneto region that is light, refreshing, and perfect for sipping on a hot summer day. Another favorite is Rosé, a pink-hued wine that is crisp, fruity, and pairs well with a wide range of dishes.

In addition to Prosecco and Rosé, Italians also enjoy white wines such as Pinot Grigio and Vermentino, which are known for their bright acidity and citrus flavors. For those who prefer red wine, varieties like Sangiovese and Nero d’Avola are popular choices, as they are light-bodied and easy to drink in the summer heat.

In America, summer vacation definitely includes August, a warm and popular time for travel and relaxation.  Many people like to experiment with new foods and wines during their travels, and the aforementioned Italian favorites will serve well with American summertime meals.  Rosé in America has experienced a surge in popularity in recent years thanks to its versatility and easy-drinking nature. Whether you prefer a dry, fruity Rosé or a more floral and aromatic variety, there is sure to be a bottle that suits your taste.

Another wine that is a perfect match for hot weather is Sauvignon Blanc, a crisp, refreshing white wine that pairs well with a variety of dishes, from seafood to salads to grilled vegetables.  A lighter red option such as Gamay is also a great choice for warm weather with its lower tannins and alcohol, making it perfect for sipping on a hot summer day.

When it comes to food and wine pairings for the summer, there are plenty of delicious options to choose from. For a picnic or outdoor barbecue, a crisp, chilled white wine like Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay pairs beautifully with grilled fish, chicken, or vegetables. If you’re in the mood for something more casual, hoist a glass of Rosé for the perfect companion to a charcuterie board or a fresh summer salad.

Overall, Ferragosto is a time for Italians to relax, unwind, and enjoy the simple pleasures in life, and Americans on summer vacation are sure to relate.  So whether you’re vacationing in Italy or enjoying a summer break closer to home, be sure to savor the flavors of the season with a glass of your favorite wine and a delicious meal.

Cheers to a happy Ferragosto and a summer filled with good food, good wine, and good company!
